Nicole Ari Parker (born Nicole Ari Parker) is an American actress who works in television, film and theatre. Her most well-known role is Teri Joe, a fiery lawyer in The Showtime show Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name following her marriage. As a child, she was a naturally talented actor. At an Maryland competition for high school students she took home the award for the Best Actress. Alongside her involvement at the theater, she also worked with The Washington Ballet Company. The company awarded her the degree of Acting at New York University. Contractor who was born in Mumbai and lived in Nigeria for seven years had a wide range of adventures and cultural encounters from the age of. She attended boarding school at the age of 7 until 9 in London. After that, she and her family moved back to Toronto (Canada) where they spent her entire childhood. In Toronto, Contractor excelled in academics and trained as a classical ballerina. She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts. It is a special high school that teaches arts where she did not only take classes in theater but also performed as well. Contractor began her acting career at 16, following nearly 10 years in dance. She received a full-scholarship grant to pursue a degree at the University of Toronto after graduating. There she earned her master's in theatre, and also double-majored in sociology and psychology. Contractor was a participant in the highly acclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, for Pericles. After an entire year of auditions, she was offered the leading role. In 2002, Canadian critics praised her performance in 92 performances of the play. Contractor was offered the opportunity to take part in the conservatory program, where only eight males and four women are accepted for a course lasting 20 weeks on classical theater which she eagerly took. Contractor's place in the following play season was secured and she was chosen in the play as Hermia.
